Are there any more pickleball courts planned?

lynde asked almost 2 years ago

Thanks for your question and interest in Pickleball courts. The City currently has nine courts throughout its Parks system that are open to the public. While there aren’t any additional Pickleball courts planned for 2022, we are aware there is interest for more opportunities to play and are evaluating opportunities for expanded offerings.

Thank you for your comment. The City of Richmond Boulevard Maintenance bylaw has clear guidelines related to maintenance of plants on private property. This past Summer 2022 saw extreme heat temperatures labeled as a "heat dome". There are no large trees in many of the city parks. Trees provide shade cover from the sun. Does the city have a budget allocated to planting more trees? My local park, Tait Waterfront has no trees but only long grass.

AlinaL asked almost 2 years ago

Thank you for your comment. Our department maintains a Tree Compensation Account where we receive funds specifically for compensatory tree planting from tree removal due to developments. The City of Richmond plants many trees on an annual basis as per the Public Tree Management Strategy guidelines, we recognize the multiple benefits from trees and will continue to look for opportunities to plant the right trees at the right locations.

Tait Waterfront Park was delivered to the City by developer as part of a nearby townhouse development. The design of the park was determined after an extensive public engagement process and our department is not prepared to change the design at this time. However, in the future dike raising capital projects may take place in this area and impact the park; Parks will review any potential improvements to this park at that time and may include additional tree planting.

Can you consider to build a light work in Blundell Park ? It would create more safety situations for people they walk through especially in Winter time evenings

SeekPerfect asked almost 2 years ago

Thank you for your question. Our Parks and Open Space System has a hierarchy of parks that serve neighbourhoods and the broader community, it is this hierarchy that assists the City in determining the appropriate capital investment in the right park location. Lighting in parks requires significant capital investment, may result in neighbourhood concerns regarding light pollution or potentially increase foot traffic in the park and neighbourhood in the late evening hours; it is for these and other reasons, neighbourhood parks in Richmond typically do not have supplemental lighting.

I HAVE ONE burning question: why is the Off-leash Dog Park on Thompson Road near Hamilton not fenced and gated? I went there twice with my dog and I constantly had to run after it outside the enclosure because it would chase other dogs on their way out. I had to constantly worry whether a passing car would hit it, or ran off somewhere I can't catch it. Please do something about it.

Hi there. Thanks for your question. We recently concluded a Let’s Talk Richmond engagement process focused on dog off-leash areas in Hamilton. The survey questions aimed to get feedback, including current challenges and concerns, and desires for dog off-leash area improvements. City staff are currently studying the survey results, and will use this data to inform next steps to ensure Hamilton’s dog off-leash areas meet the needs of the community.

Wondering if anything came from the discussion of a dog park in Hamilton? I see that there is quite a bit being done in the Steveston area.

I live within five mins of the park. The Minoru Lakes Renewal plans are clear and succinct. My main concern relates to the 'Improving Safety' goal and the safety history of the lake. Since the creation of the lakes, have there been any documented drownings or serious water safety incidents? If so, how have these incidents influenced the new design? Thank you.

jgallo asked almost 2 years ago

Thanks for your question. The Minoru Lakes Renewal design was guided through feedback we heard during public engagement. The lakes were designed as a park amenity for stormwater management and wildlife. Swimming is not a permitted use and there have not been any documented water incidents. In general, site safety will be enhanced through clear sightlines, edge and spatial transitions, and increased lighting.
