By nominating a site you can help raise awareness of Richmond’s Places That Matter.

Richmond is a city that proudly celebrates its past, present and future. It is a unique community with a richly layered history. The City is in the process of updating its Heritage Inventory – a process which was last completed in 2002.

We invite you to participate from March 6 to 24, 2019.

The Heritage Inventory is a list of landscapes, buildings, and other structures that matter to our community. It is used as a tool for the City to manage these resources for current and future generations.

OBJECTIVES

  • add, correct or delete where necessary, properties on the Heritage Inventory;
  • establish a framework and criteria to facilitate decision making on additions and future City actions; and
  • identify, for Council’s consideration, properties that are recommended for further heritage protection, tools available to the City to provide increased heritage protection, and legal issues and ramifications.

WHAT ARE 'PLACES THAT MATTER'?

As part of the process of updating the Heritage Inventory, we invite residents to nominate sites to be included on the City’s Heritage Inventory. These can be:

  • buildings
  • engineering works
  • cultural landscapes - places that demonstrate or provide a tangible link to Richmond’s heritage and past, no matter how modest or grand, and contribute to a sense of place for residents in our city.

There are many reasons to include a place on the Heritage Inventory: It can be meaningful to a particular era, community, institution, person, event, or tradition; it is important in the historic development in a neighbourhood or the city; or because of its design, architecture, uniqueness, rarity, and quality of construction.

HOW TO NOMINATE A SITE
