What is circularity?

At the City of Richmond, we are reimagining our resource use through our Circular City Strategy—maximizing material value, creating opportunities and reducing waste. This refurbished blue couch is a perfect example.

What started as an experiment—repurposing items designated for the landfill—became a creative challenge embraced by Langara College students and faculty. Using innovative methods, they turned discarded jeans into durable upholstery, breathing new life into this couch and its story.

This was a true collaboration between the City of Richmond and students at Langara Makerspace, proving that circular innovation is practical, inspiring and impactful.

More than furniture, the couch symbolizes endless regeneration, the value of unexpected materials and how partnerships can drive economic and social benefits.

It stands as a reminder that every material and collaboration can create meaningful change toward a resilient, circular future.
